Internet and minors

Following a request made by the European Commission, TNS Opinion & Social has conducted a survey in the 25 countries of the EU to give an outline of the Internet phenomenon impact on families. According to what has been reported, at least 50% of children between the ages of 5 and 17 normally access the Internet. Obviously, these percentages increase with the increase of age, exceeding 80% for twelve-year-olds and older children.

The survey has also pointed out that between young male and female web users, the males are very slightly the most regular users.

Moreover, compared to previous years, there is an increase which goes to show that the Internet phenomenon is expanding in all European households, obviously with differences from one country to another. There are substantial differences especially between UE15 (Italy, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Holland, Belgium, The United Kingdom, Ireland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Denmark, Sweden, Finland) and the 10 New Member Countries (Hungary, Poland, The Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Malta, and Cyprus) due to the single social and economical contexts. However, these are mainly the countries that show the highest percentages of rate increases, and they shall presumably have a steady increase in the near future.
